The news Apple fans have been waiting for is finally here.Apple is starting 2nm chip production tests with TSMC and these chips will be used in iPhone 17, next generation Mac and iPad models starting from 2025.So what innovations will these chips offer?
Apple begins 2nm chip testing: Big innovations coming to iPhone 17 and next-generation Macs
The new 2nm chip technology means a big technological leap for Apple. With the transition to the 2nm process, we learned that Apple will switch from FinFET transistors to GAAFET (Gate-All-Around Field Effect Transistor) transistors. What this means is that GAAFET transistors provide higher speeds at smaller sizes and lower operating voltages.
So, thanks to 2nm chip technology, Apple will increase chip performance by 10-15 percent and reduce energy consumption by 30 percent. This means faster, more efficient and more powerful devices. TSMC has completed production preparations for these chips at its factory in Baoshan in northern Taiwan.
Production machines were installed during the second quarter and are now ready for test production. These test productions are the first concrete step towards mass production starting in 2025. Apple is working closely with TSMC to accelerate this process. 2nm chip technology will provide a huge boost in performance and efficiency.
The 2nm chip, which will reach higher speeds thanks to GAAFET transistors, will also consume less energy. This will significantly improve the performance of iPhone 17, next-generation Macs and iPads and maximize the user experience. In addition, the use of new chips will extend the battery life of Apple devices.
